Intake and Exhaust Flow

In most cases, mass of air entering or the mass of exhaust leaving the engine must be measured in order to complete the emissions calculations. Because intake air is at ambient temperature, it is generally preferable to measure it rather than exhaust. If, however, emissions are measured dilute or fuel flow is measured, then neither is strictly required.
